AmeriCorps members commit to serving with the Parks and Recreation Department for a period of 3, 6, or 10 months. Members will be improving green spaces in West Lafayette. The mission of the West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department is to enhance the quality of life in the city by connecting its citizens to the best possible parks, recreational facilities, and programs. Our AmeriCorps program aims to further develop and conserve our public greenspaces through service experience. The department is seeking AmeriCorps members interested in park restoration efforts. Project members will participate in reducing the impact of invasive species, restoring native plants and habitats, reducing erosion, protecting watersheds, increasing public safe access, including Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, and protecting flora and fauna. Improvement will be consistent with an accepted natural resource restoration, maintenance, or improvement plan.
Member Duties : Our AmeriCorps program aims to further develop and conserve our public greenspaces through service experience. • Assists and supports environmental stewardship, greenspace, and community development projects. • Crew leaders offer mentorship and support to 6-8 crew members. • Cultivate community-wide relationships including volunteer outreach and recruitment. • Support educational opportunities surrounding the environment, sustainability, conservation and more for community members of all ages. • Participate and support department staff during community events. • Performs landscape maintenance to include planting, pruning, weeding, mulching, watering, and propagating, as well as other horticultural practices and general greenspace management. • Performs conservation practices such as invasive plant removal, installing native plants, erosion mitigation, mulching on project sites, resource monitoring, sign installation, trail construction and maintenance.
